Jolly Phonics originated in the U.K. in the early 1990’s. It provides a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It uses the synthetic phonics method of teaching the letter sounds in a way that is fun and multi-sensory. Children learn how to use the letter sounds to read and write words. Jolly Phonics includes learning the irregular or `tricky’ words such as said, was and the.

The Program highlights five basic skills for reading and writing:

  1. Learning 42 letter sounds

  2. Learning letter formation’

  3. Blending

  4. Identifying sounds in words

  5. Spelling tricky words

Jolly Phonics is now used in over 100 countries around the World. An overwhelming amount of research has been conducted on synthetic phonics and particularly the Jolly Phonics program. A snapshot of the research is included in our Resource file. (REMINDER: Include Dr. Dale Willows study and case studies).
